Arlington, VA - October 19, 2007
On the occasion of releasing The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Global Initiative for Inclusive ICTs (G3ICT) has released a publication, entitled "The Accessibility Imperative". The book serves as a reference material for establishing accessibility standards and accessibility programs around the world based on the new Convention On The Rights Of People With Disabilities. The book contains the actual Convention, together with its implications. A major portion of the book discusses success stories of making technology accessible for people with disabilities. These stories are much more than encouregemnet, they can serve as actual guidelines for establishing similar programs. Another section of the book discusses how legislation can promote accessibility.
The owner of Even Grounds, Tom Babinszki has published an article in the book, entitled "Legislation as a Tool to Implement Accessibility Requirements". Mr. Babinszki discusses how mandatory legislation in individual countires could make a difference in establishing more accessible technology. He draws examples from countries which have already established accessibility related legislation and shows how these benefits could be achieved in developing countries as well.
